SING A SONG SUNDAY: WEEK 1
SHANIA TWAIN – POOR ME
During week 1, I asked a friend and coworker to pick her choice of artist or genre. She originally couldn’t decide between a few artists, but by the end of our work day, she chose Shania Twain. I was super excited, because I have always been a fan of Shania Twain since I was younger, and covering one of her songs the first week sounded fun.
As I drove home that night, I began listening to her albums from the beginning of her career, to her most recent, which is where I chose my song selection from. Of course, many people, including myself, go for the Shania hits, such as From This Moment On, and That Don’t Impress Me Much, but I came across a song that spoke to me in a new way. As I listened to her new album, NOW!, I found the song Poor Me. Poor Me has a double meaning that caught my attention right away. While the song speaks about pitying yourself during a breakup, it also speaks about pouring another shot/drink to basically numb the pain.
I believe everyone, some time in their life, goes through that rough time where our hearts can’t take any more pity. Poor Me describes, lyrically, exactly how that feels. I, myself, went through such a time. The feeling of heartbreak and betrayal is devastating to say the least, but pitying yourself can only get you so far. We have to start to understand what we are all worth and that life is to short to wallow around in sadness and anger. Singing this song brought back those memories, not in a bad way, but as a reminder of the life that wasn’t meant for me.
